Time to get refresher training?

Established in 1994, this scheme is recognised nationally as the industry standard of training and assessment, with over 10,000 candidates having successfully completed the course to date.

CompEx is a training initiative, jointly developed by the Engineering Equipment and Materials Users’ Association (EEMUA) and JTL, the leading training provider to the building services engineering sector. The scheme is accredited by JTL and supported by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

What's available?

The CompEx course currently consists of ten training and assessment units. These units can be studied individually or as complementary pairs.

These units are:

  Preparation and installation of Ex'd', Ex'e', Ex'n' and Ex'p'systems.

Inspection and maintenance of Ex'd', Ex'e', Ex'n' and Ex'p' systems.

Preparation and installation of Ex'i' systems.

Inspection and maintenance of Ex'i' systems.

Preparation and installation of apparatus protected by enclosure for use in the presence of combustible dusts.

Inspection and maintenance of apparatus protected by enclosure for use in the presence of combustible dusts.

Preparation, installation and de-commissioning of electrical installations at petrol filling stations.

Inspection, test and maintenance of electrical installations at petrol filling stations

Preparation and installation of electrical installations within the water industry (Ex'd', Ex'e', Ex'n', Ex'p', Ex'i' and dust).

Inspection and maintenance of electrical installations within the water industry (Ex'd', Ex'e', Ex'n', Ex'p', Ex'i' and dust).

How are the units taken?

Epsilon provides 3 main groups of units as these are the most frequently requested by sites with explosive atmospheres. Please click the link to jump to the course you are interested in.

  1. CompEx Full course: For Electrical Engineers who may be called on to work in potentially explosive gas and dust atmospheres

  2. CompEx Dust course: For Electrical Engineers who may be called on to work in potentially explosive dust atmospheres only

  3. CompEx Refresher Course. This course is mandatory within 5 years of gaining your CompEx Qualification. If you do not do the refresher (and pass the test), you will no longer be qualified 'CompEx'. This course can also be taken as an overview of Explosive Atmosphere Installation and Inspection.

  4. CompEx Exam Only. One or two days of tests and assessments (depending on the units covered) to the CompEx assessment criteria including a theory paper, practical installation and practical inspections. Only recommended for trained, experienced installers.

Who is the course aimed at?

Electrotechnical craftspersons who need to develop and demonstrate their competency in the selection, installation, inspection and maintenance of electrical apparatus in potentially explosive atmospheres, through a nationally industry recognised and certificated training and assessment scheme.

What subjects are covered?

Subjects covered include: area classification; temperature classification; gas groups; dust protection; IP ratings; impact protection and other environmental influences; ignition sources; marking and identification; legislation; directives and standards; earthing; bonding; protection methods in detail; Ex'd', Ex'e', Ex'n', Ex'p', Ex'i', Ex'm', Ex'o', Ex'q'; dust protection by enclosure; wiring systems and glanding; installation, maintenance, inspection and testing.

How will I be assessed?

The assessments are both practical and written and can take two days to complete, and follow on immediately from the training. Each candidate is required to demonstrate competence through a series of practical tests and written multi-choice test papers, with successful candidates receiving a CompEx Certificate of Core Competence.

Where will I need to go to be trained or assessed?

Whilst it is recommended that the entire course be taken at our training center near Chester so that the practical and theoretical work can be done on a daily basis, it is possible to do all the theory together followed by all of the practical work.

It is possible to run 2-3 days of theory training and  theory exams at the trainees location if there are a number of trainees from one location. The practical assessment will still be required (1-2 days) but this can be carried out at any time soon after the theory has been delivered at the Chester site, minimising time away from work and mobilisation costs.
